MACHINE SHOULDER PRESS
Machine exercise that safely and efficiently increases the size and strength of shoulder muscles through a fixed trajectory.
Adjust the height of the machine seat so that the handle is at shoulder height. Place your back against the backrest and hold the handle with both hands. Plant your feet firmly on the floor and tense your core. Exhale and push the handle upwards above your head. After feeling the shoulder contraction at the top, slowly and controlledly return to the starting position.
- Primary muscles
- Anterior Deltoid
- Secondary muscles
- Lateral Deltoid Triceps Brachii
- Difficulty
- Beginner
- Movement type
- Vertical Push

Are they less effective than free weights?
No, the purpose is different. Free weights are good for developing coordination and stability, while machines may be better for target muscle isolation and hypertrophy.
STEP BY STEP
4 Steps for One Complete Rep

- 1
Setting and Preparation
Adjust the seat height to suit your body shape. The height is appropriate so that there is no strain on your shoulders when holding the handle.
- 2
Push Up
Push the handle vertically up along the trajectory of the machine. Concentrate on letting your shoulder muscles take the lead.
- 3
Apex Contraction
When you extend your arm, pause for a moment while maintaining tension in your shoulder muscles. Don't lock your elbows completely.
- 4
Slow return
Slowly lower the weight to the starting position under control. Begin the next repetition before the weight stack fully touches down.
MACHINE BENEFITS
Take advantage of machine workouts
The machine shoulder press eliminates the need for balance, allowing you to focus solely on deltoid isolation. This is very effective when performing high rep training or drop sets for hypertrophy.
It also has a low risk of injury, making it a great choice as a cool-down exercise to fully tire out your shoulder muscles after free weight pressing.

RANGE, LOAD & TEMPO
Choose a range and load that keep the Machine Shoulder Press repeatable
The useful range of motion ends before your torso or working joints have to change position to move the load. Keep the anterior deltoid producing the movement while the lateral deltoid triceps brachii support the same alignment from the first repetition to the last.
Use a controlled lowering phase of about two to three seconds and avoid bouncing through the transition. If the final repetitions become shorter, faster, or visibly different from the first, reduce the load or stop the set before technique breaks down.

Key point: Progress the Machine Shoulder Press only after every repetition follows the same path without joint pain.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Fix the cause of a mistake, not just its appearance
When hips are pushed forward
- What you see
- A posture in which the buttocks move forward away from the seat when pushing the weight.
- Likely cause
- A compensatory movement that tries to overuse the chest muscles (upper pectoralis major) because the weight is too heavy.
- How to correct it
- Press your buttocks deeply into the backrest and tighten your abdominal muscles to secure your upper body.
Shrug
- What you see
- A condition in which the shoulders rise toward the ears throughout the movement and the trapezius muscle becomes excessively tense.
- Likely cause
- Absence of shoulder lowering force (scapular depression).
- How to correct it
- Press down and fix the shoulder and push with the feeling that only the arm is moving.
REGRESSION & PROGRESSION
Match the difficulty before adding load
Neutral Grip Machine Press
If you have a handle that holds your palms facing each other, use it to prevent shoulder impingement and further target the anterior deltoids.
One Arm Machine Press
Perform with one arm at a time to improve stimulation of each shoulder and balance left and right strength.
BEGINNER PROGRAM
A practical starting framework
The machine shoulder press is very efficient in increasing the size of your shoulder muscles. Place it at the beginning or middle of your routine.
Frequency
1-2 times a week
Combine with free weight press or use as your main exercise.
Volume
3~4 sets, 10~15 times
The number of repetitions is good to induce muscle pumping by taking advantage of the machine's characteristics.
- Don’t try to force the machine’s trajectory to change, just let it go with the flow.
- Rest your head comfortably on the backrest throughout the movement.
- Use the full range of motion to fully relax your muscles.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I hold the handle?
Generally, a slightly wider grip than shoulder width is better for engaging the lateral delts, but choose the most comfortable position based on the geometry of the machine.
